Dessalines S.T.E.A.M Academy is committed to addressing the urgent need for equitable access to quality STEAM education, particularly for students from historically marginalized communities. In today’s rapidly advancing world, knowledge in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics is crucial for economic mobility and future career success. However, many children, especially those from low-income and immigrant families, lack access to the resources, mentorship, and opportunities necessary to thrive in these fields. Ultimately, our vision is to ensure that marginalized communities have a path to economic stability and prosperity. We see STEAM education as a powerful vehicle for achieving this goal, as it equips students with the skills and knowledge required for the careers of tomorrow. We believe that many of our youth could and should take advantage of the opportunities within the STEAM fields, including opportunities for entrepreneurship!
Our work focuses on three key areas: Community Outreach and programming, Dessalines’ Microschool, and Education Advocacy.
The majority of our efforts are dedicated to providing underserved children with hands-on STEAM learning through our Shades of STEM: Engineering-Is-US Community Outreach Programs. These programs offer workshops, mentorship, and real-world experiences, helping students develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a passion for innovation.
Dessalines S.T.E.A.M operates a homeschool co-op that functions as a STEAM-centered microschool for families looking for alternatives to traditional education. This program provides personalized learning environments where students can engage deeply with STEAM subjects, develop practical skills, and nurture their creativity and independence. We believe that this work is just as vital as our Community Outreach Programs, as we are dedicated to supporting all educational settings that offer enriching and empowering experiences for marginalized families. Families seeking alternatives to conventional educational paths should have the opportunity to explore non-traditional options for their children.
We also advocate for equitable education policies and provide ongoing support to families through workshops, seminars, and advocacy services. Our goal is to help parents navigate the education system and ensure their children have access to high-quality educational opportunities.
